Artist Statement

My practice examines how my personal history and psychological experience shaped my identity and emotional expression. Working primarily with painting, sculpture, and mixed media, I explore themes of adoption, individuality, and mental health as a way to process my thoughts. I am motivated by an interest in how emotions such as isolation, vulnerability, and resilience can be communicated through material and process. By layering materials, manipulating surfaces, and combining different media, I aim to create work that reflects the complexity of my emotional experience while inviting the viewer to engage in critical personal reflection.

My work is influenced by artists such as Sarah Sze and Emily Kam Kngwarray, whose practices inform both my conceptual approach and material choices. Sarah Sze’s use of accumulation and everyday materials has influenced my sculptural and mixed-media work, particularly in the way I construct layered compositions that represent mental and emotional complexity. In contrast, Emily Kam Kngwarray’s mark-making and organic forms have influenced my painting practice, encouraging a more intuitive, repetitive approach. The importance of my work lies in its focus on themes that could be overlooked, particularly adoption and mental health, offering visual spaces for empathy, recognition, and dialogue.

Overall, my practice seeks to create a visual language that conveys personal and emotional narratives while remaining open to the viewer's interpretation. By engaging with themes of mental health and individuality, my work encourages viewers to reflect on their own emotional experiences and consider the ways both internal and external factors shape identity. Moving forward, I aim to expand my use of mixed media and scale. I want to continue exploring space and materials to find new ways to express myself. Ultimately, my work aspires to foster empathy and understanding, using art as a platform for dialogue around emotional awareness and self-identity.
